#BorrowHat Beach Adventure

9 May 2015.

The night before, I slept over a girlfriend’s place and she introduced me to three episodes of Parks & Recreation, and I remember expressing to her how much I liked the fact that the two female protagonists (played by Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones) were total “bros” and were so considerate of the other’s feelings and aspirations. They were there to support and encourage each other in big aspects of their lives. You know, like how friendships are really supposed to be.

The next morning, we got up early and rounded up the rest of the girls for a surprise beach trip for a lady we all love. It was exciting and so out of character, because we’re city girls and usually beaches trips aren’t part of the weekend. We even got SJ’s parents in on the plan, and I remember thinking, “Women are amazing?! Everything is so organized and easy!” I’m such a fan of women. (I’m also a big fan of parents, but that’s another story entirely.)

I know the trip might look like a lot of fun (and trust me, it was), but sometimes the best part about any trip can’t be captured on camera.

Here are my non-camera highlights:

The car ride going to Subic. We talked about many things: the recent summer camps we served in, the intricacies and complexities of the Church, the changing psyche of the youth, life frustrations, cute boys with matching wit, probably some Disney stuff, and online shopping (the girls talked about Zalora, and how they do cash-on-delivery, which piqued my interested because I AM SO APPREHENSIVE ABOUT ONLINE SHOPPING!? I actually checked out the website, and saw that Zalora offers this season’s in key-trend, off shoulder tops! They’re quite pretty, and I think they’d balance my hairdo well. :) ) We also tried to catch up on each other’s lives, since all of us are in the space of finding jobs we love and want to commit to.

Inside jokes and conversations. There’s a reason why we call this particular group #BorrowHat, and it made us laugh too long. We prayed. We made a beautiful huddle by the beachside to speak about life, love, fear, marriage, pride, pain and heartbreak, and how God speaks through all those mediums not only to bring us to a better understanding of ourselves and how we should live our lives (though I have to admit that’s a pretty big bonus), but ultimately a better understanding of Himself.

Time by the beach. I don’t have pictures of the time I was reading and writing by the beach side. But these are my precious morsels of time, the stuff my joy is made of. Time passes slowly when you’re lazing out in the sun.

There are days when I am overwhelmed by the beauty of life, and it is during these days that I want to meet every single person alive out there – even strangers, those who don’t understand me, those I do not agree with, those who wish me harm – because of the intrinsic, specific beauty of people. You, dear reader, have written in your heart-mind-soul the handprint of the divine. For this, I want to see you because you are dusted with glorious eternity.

I will probably never meet every single person in the entire living world in my lifetime, but I am taking extra time today to remind myself today how precious it is to know the people I know. Thank you, Issa, Karen, Jess, Alyssa, and to the lady we all used as an excuse to go to the beach for (HAHAHA) – SJ. :)

Thank you for being the Amy Poehler to my Rashida Jones and the Rashida Jones to my Amy Poehler that day. Thank you, thank you, and thank You.

Tell me, have you gone to the beach recently? :D

Still fighting for joy,
Najee

PS. We went to Camayan Beach Resort in Subic Bay. (2-2.5 hours away from Manila)
It was a public beach, so there were a LOT of people when we visited.
Shower rooms were public (meaning, out in the open) with toilets inside.
We ended up taking showers back in Ortigas. :)) I don’t think we’d be coming back here, to be honest. The entrance fee to the beach per head is PHP 300 only! You can do a lot of other activities, should you so desire.

The beauty of life can sometimes be striking, and it is during these days that I want to meet every single person alive out there – even those who don’t understand me, those I do not agree with, those who wish me harm – because of the intrinsic, specific beauty of people. You, dear reader, have written in your heart the handprint of the divine. You are dusted with glorious eternity. Praying that you awaken to that truth.

Thank you for being the Amy Poehler to my Rashida Jones and the Rashida Jones to my Amy Poehler that day. Yay for these girlies, and thank You.

Tell me reader, have you gone to the beach recently? :D And do you also get struck by the beauty of life sometimes? :)

I like being on the floor and crushing ice with my teeth. John 3:30 is a significant verse in my life.
